Memories
When my dad sold his shop, we went through some things that he was either getting rid of, or selling along with the shop. This ladder was one of those things. It was too rickety to use as an actual step ladder, but in decent condition to do something with. I felt it would be nice to have something that had been used in the shop where I learned many lessons on good work habits.
I LOVED it the moment I saw it. I knew exactly what this ladder was to become. It would become...my blanket ladder. I have an abundance of blankets and was thrilled to be able to give this ladder a new life.
I had to start with taking off the back part of the ladder seeing as it wasn't going to be useful in this project.
Hearing protection was a must.
So were some helpful tools.
And here's the leftover of what I pulled apart.
Now, I don't have pictures of all the steps but I will try to tell you all I did. I did sand it all. Lightly of course. There is some very distinct paint splatters on this ladder and I didn't want to take the charm and uniquness away from it by sanding it all the way down to just wood.
So a gentle sand I did. Then I took some polyurethane and did a number of coats on it so that there would be no snagging or anything to the blankets when I hang them on it. Doing a light sanding between the layers was a must also to help with keeping it as smooth as possible.
At some point, my mom saw this ladder and said "I believe that used to be my dad's ladder." Upon closer inspection, she realized yes indeed it was. She was even able to tell me where the green paint splatters came from.
Now, I don't have a final final photo of it with the blankets on it yet, but it has been being used in the living room holding blankets as it is intended to do. I have offered it to mom if she wants to keep it in there for her own use and I have procured a similar ladder that I would have to do these steps to again to make it for my room. But I am willing to do that if mom would like to keep this piece of her childhood.
I have done quite a lot more work on things for my room but I have not been able to get the photos onto the computer to be able to put them into blog posts, but don't any of you fear! It will happen!
Also, things might slow down a little as I am starting a new job that has me away from home 2 weeks at a time. I do plan on working on my room the two weeks I am at home. I am looking forward to getting this room done!
Hope all is well with you all.
Until next time.

I love this idea!!!! OOOOOH it would be so cool if you have two of those, use BOTH sides of the ladders to hang even MORE blankies on, secure a board or two on top and use as a little like... wall table or something lol. Well, I suppose it's taller than that. Mmmm, hanging planters underneath? Flowers on top? Craft supplies on top! Ok, my brain is going now, lol.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many things one can do with an old wooden ladder. However, NY room isn't big enough for the things you suggested lol. Having it open and putting boards across to make it a shelf, make it a light fixture on the wall or from the ceiling, attach it to the wall and put hangers on it.... the list goes on and on!
